In humble submission to the will of God we respectfully announce the earthly transition of Mr. Joe L. Burgess on August 31, 2021 in the Bonifay Nursing & Rehab. Center of Bonifay, Florida. He was 87 years old and a native of Holmes County, Florida.
Joe Burgess, "Pig" as he was affectionately known, was born on April 21, 1934 in Bonifay, Florida to the parentage of the late Samuel Burnett and Mamie Burgess.
He graduated from Roulhac High School in Chipley, Florida. He joined the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and was a lifelong member. He had an adventurous mind and wanted to travel. As a result, he joined the United States Navy and traveled the world. After his service in the Navy, he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled the world again. After the Merchant Marines, he worked with the L&N Railroad on the oil rigs in Louisiana. After returning to live in Bonifay he worked a brief stint with the City of Bonifay.
Joe is survived by his nephew: Samuel Bernard (Debra) Burgess of Pensacola, Florida; two nieces: Mary Williams of Jacksonville, Florida, and Rosa Gilmore of Bonifay, Florida; great-nephew: Tyree Burgess of Pensacola, Florida; great-great nephew: Tyree Burgess, Jr. of Pensacola, Florida; great-great niece: Kalisha Abbott of Houston, Texas; extended family members: Harold Pope of Sebring, Florida, Jackie Williams of Lakeland, Florida, Tommy Taylor of Jacksonville, Florida, and Christopher Denner of Orlando, Florida; along with a host of other close relatives and friends.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother: Ella Mosley; siblings: James Davis, Beulah Mae Burgess, Charlie James Burgess, Bernice Holmes; nieces: Rebecca Gilmore; great-nieces: an infant (Rebecca's daughter), and Lavada Gilmore; nephews: John Gilmore and Leroy Gilmore.
